The Centre for Modern Indian Studies at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen is currently inviting applications for a

Postdoctoral Fellow in Society and Culture in Modern India

The position will start on 1 April 2013 or thereafter. We offer a three-year fixed-term contract, with the possibility for renewal contingent upon the availability of funding. This is a full-time position (currently 39,8 hours per week) and remunerated according to E13 TV-L (German public sector pay scale).

In addition to pursuing a postdoctoral research project, the fellow will assist in the design and organization of international conferences on culture and society in modern India, and in the teaching of anthropology or sociology courses at the Centre for Modern Indian Studies. The scholar will be based at the University of Göttingen in Germany.

Applicants must have a PhD in anthropology or in allied fields including sociology, media studies, religious studies or history.

Preference will be given to candidates whose research and writing addresses one or more of the following topics: ethnic and/or religious diversity in urban contexts, Indian urbanity, media, performance, and public spheres, linguistic differentiation, popular/public culture. Candidates with comparative interests and a focus on religious mobilization are particularly encouraged to apply.

Applicants from all countries are encouraged to apply. English proficiency is expected; German proficiency is an asset.
